MACRODONS @ POPUP THREETEN !

POPUP310
MACRODONS

Billy Zinser's MACRODONS series 2 figures & oil paintings will be part of the opening exhibition at POP UP 310 -a temporary art exhibition space in Dallas' West Village, run and curated by James Cope of The Goss-Michael Foundation and Brian Gibb of The Public Trust.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: POP UP 310 is an autonomous curatorial project that will serve as a platform for artists, writers, musicians and all things creative. Housed in what was formerly the Gardens retail space in the West Village, POP UP 310 is in essence a temporary pop up gallery showcasing and exhibiting artwork by emerging and established artists. With the space located in a retail center, the focus of the artwork will be on smaller works, prints and books, creating a gallery experience which is accessible to a broader range of art patrons. This model will also create opportunities for artists to experiment with ideas and materials that may not necessarily be shown in a commercial environment. At its core POP UP 310 is a work in progress, an ongoing project to be considered as an art installation it self.

BILLY ZINSER

BILLY ZINSER THUMP 2010 acrylic, oil, enamel on panel, 24 x 24 inches

My work is defined by a cartoonish approach to non-objective abstract painting intended to address color, line, and shape as the subject matter of the work, through simple gestures and automatic mark making.

In my paintings I combine these effects with a variety of qualities inherent to the medium of paint and painting, primarily the physicality of the medium and the mark-making of the brushstroke (be that with or without a brush). At times the paint is delivered straight-out-of-the-tube, or manipulated with a utensil to shape it's texture; when applying brushstrokes, some are very slowly and deliberately applied, making their laziness evident when in proximity to a more frenzied automatic mark-making gesture. The body of the paint is also manipulated dramatically, creating tension between sloppy 'juicy' dribbles, stiff paint with erect peaks, richly textured brush marks, globs easily perceived as mistakes, and 'inproper' layering of mediums resulting in wrinkled prematurely dried sagging and leaking paint skin...

379 (sketch for new toy design)

MACRODONS

this drawing is really rough, but I really liked the half-way-there unfinished state it is in; the design is pretty clear, and just leaves a few things left to resolve. (i.e. is that a hole or an eye? Xenon?)

378 (sketch for new toy design)

MACRODONS

This would make a good blank DIY toy, but it is almost too simple, it just about stops being a MACRODON.
