This was a weird process, I started with a couple of ideas, and wanted to work them both out (first and second drawings), then, the paint sort of took over (see the third one), and from there this final (fourth) variation spawned.

308 VARIATIONS x 4
This was a weird process, I started with a couple of ideas, and wanted to work them both out (first and second drawings), then, the paint sort of took over (see the third one), and from there this final (fourth) variation spawned.

119 & VARIATIONS
Here is the last of the "twelve sketches" I started several days ago.
And here are a few of the changes it went through:
neck/head/antennae variations.

115-116 & VARIATIONS
Again, I skipped a few days, but not for lack of making MACRODONS, just not illustrations though (more on that in a future blog post). So here is another pair of MACRODONS along with a few variations they went through, due to my indecisiveness. The initial sketches for these illustrations can be seen here. As can be seen, I like to leave the rough pencil markings as a sort of indication of where the drawing is going, and how it informs each stage in the process. The MACRODON on the right has a sort-of-horse-like quality to it on and off again, something a little different for a MACRODON...

106-107 & VARIATIONS
After skipping yesterday, I doubled up on drawings (and then some). Here are illustrations 106 & 107, side by side, with their multiple variations. Above is the final result (and seventh re-working of the initial sketch, seen here). As the drawing progressed, and digressed, you'll see that the changes occurred in the "head" area, while th "body" mostly remained unchanged.
The MACRODON on the left looks like a walking hand,
similar to Thing T. Thing from the Addams Family.
I am most satisfied with the MACRODON on the left at this stage (above).
Aside from the last drawing (the one at the top of this post), the MACRODON on the right had very subtle changes, mostly a growth in "head" size.
Again, the MACRODON on the left has a hand-like appearance, this time, if instead of being "cut-off" at the wrist, it has "feet" on it's "hand". Also, I like the MACRODON on the right most at this stage. Also, along with the final drawing of the MACRODON on the left (at the top of the post), there was a sort of conjoined MACRODON theme going for it.
I somehow lost this step in the progression of these MACRODONS even though I thought I scanned and saved it. The changes were very minimal so I was able to make similar changes through Photoshop.
And finally, below is the first step in this series of changes to these two MACRODONS, some of the initial sketching, as seen here, is still visible.
(on the left) conjoined? - (on the right) no head?

105 & VARIATIONS
This (jellyfish-like blob) is the first of the twelve sketches from yesterday, fleshed out, with a couple of variations. Because of my indecisiveness I repeatedly changed it, drawing over parts of it, but not without scanning it as I go, here are the transformations this MACRODON underwent:
In this next post I darkened those lingering lines indicative of arms in this MACRODON's previous incarnations:
In this last one is a Photoshop composite of the first drawing with arms:
This post is sort of a gnarly-er version of these MACRODONS here.

104 "WISDOM TEETH VARIATIONS"
My wife had her wisdom teeth removed today, she got to bring them home (3 out of the 4, #4 was too broken) here is one of them. So, as you can see, now out of Emily's mouth, these wisdom teeth have changed into MACRODONS:

As you can see, there are only 3, because the broken tooth is M.I.A. Once again, I made some drawings on paper, pasted to acetate and laid them over the initial drawing, like in previous posts: 062 + 082.

082 + VARIATIONS (with arms)
I felt like the "Walking Man-Macrodon" deserved arms, so here are a few options I came up with, once again, I made some arms I could add or remove, painted on paper attached to a piece of clear acetate.
here is the "Walking Man", like Rodin's, without arms.
in the spirit of the "Walking Man", the arms are in a sort of static motion,
as if walking.
with a top heavy upper body it seemed this Macrodon could have some big arms,
sort of like muscles here: 056.
wobbly arms
with wobbly arms thrown up, this could be another (less crazy) version of 026.
6-armed MACRODON
085 + VARIATIONS (sketches)
this MACRODON went through several transformations before ending up as it did. Here is one of the underdrawings of the work in progress:
There were 2 predominant designs in the realization of this Macrodon. I pulled them out and enhanced them via Photoshop, to appear as they may have, had I been satisfied with where they were going. I do like them much more now than I did while in progress...

071 - DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
after completing this MACRODON, I envisioned him, more squat, shorter, and stockier, so I Photoshopped it some:
This is what I have been up to the past few days: paper-mâché He-Man Hair,
in stiff-looking, plastic-like, bowl-cut, page-boy fashion!
After all the fun with the PUMA shoes, I could not help myself,
this MACRODON's Halloween costume: HE-MAN!
and my wife's costume this year was Amelia Earhart, with some great vintage Wilson welding goggles, but in this case, visually perfect for an aviator costume, as fashionably sported by this Macrodon:
Okay, that was another, fun, ridiculous post.
I always assumed Macrodons had eyes, and well, really any other body part not previously represented in these illustrations, but putting goggles on it's "head", over it's "eyes" (and whose to say it's eyes are on it's "head"), a sword in it's "hand" (obviously gripped with fingers), etc., was a little disconcerting at the time... I prefer the vague anatomical visual description I have previously given them, so for now, I don't think we'll be seeing any paper-doll style dressing of Macrodons anymore...
