SMALL SCULPTURE @ MARTY WALKER GALLERY

Marty Walker Gallery presents “Small Works: Art + Object” -a small sculpture invitational group exhibition, featuring strange and fantastic small art objects from a selection of 16 stellar artists:
Megan Whitmarsh
Billy Zinser

This assembly of sculpture debunks the trend that “bigger is better,” and by working within a small format, these artists have created a mess of random creatures and fascinating objects that demonstrate the power of big ideas imagined in scaled-down and accessible forms.

MACRODONS top picks @Red's Pop Shop

MACRODONS are in excellent company at Red's Pop Shop -so I wanted to point out a few killer items from my fellow vendors:

First of all, this awesome event was put together in no small part by both Brian Gibb (multi-faceted/multi-talented artist, Art Prostitute founder, and owner of The Public Trust) and Red On Greenville's own blogger extraordinaire "Red". (so, here's equal parts kudos+thanks to them both!)

The Public Trust broke out an excellent selection of prints, t-shirts, and artist books -for this event. This next photo doesn't even do justice to Brian Gibb's rad new t-shirt design, so go to the show, see it in person, and you will be knocked off your feet by the t-shirts color combo double punch of cream + bling, then your next step: purchase! Brian's designs are pure gold, so, I could go on and on, but instead of that, see his print below, and shop for other prints @ the Art Prostitute online store, or in person at The Public Trust. [MAP]

My next door neighbor at the shop, Marisa Bosquez, is displaying her jewelry collections "Bosquez Jewelry" and "Beatrice Collection". The brass collection "Beatrice" is very fun, made of neat, whimsical components, like small cast animal shapes / graphic shapes with a hand-stamped touch. I particularly liked the brass necklace with a small wishbone charm, and the necklace with a TEXAS state shaped charm, stamped 'TEXAS' across it's face:

The Bosquez Jewelry collection -simply put, is: cosmic fantastic; made from natural stones in off-kilter, strong, elegant arrangements. There is a beautifully sci-fi story buried within all these pieces, for example, see the "Solar System Necklace" referencing an imaginary planet system from a galaxy far far away...

We are 1976 is a great boutique of pop-design and the unusual here in Dallas, and for two weeks they have been cloned and have a satellite location at Red's featuring some of their choicest selections, plus a brand new set of giant graphic wood letters ...their store is really beyond my puny description here, so go see for yourself!

Another cool shop present, Decorazon Gallery, was displaying an array of great imports and hand-made objects -click here to see the hand made monkey doll Fur Face Boy's acquired from these fine folks. Fur Face got his props in my last post, but here is a little reminder, shop!

And another slick streetware brand at the show: Decade Clothing debuted new t-shirt designs and also, as his alter ego DJ Sober scratched some fun super-dancey tunes at the afterparty!

The Sour Grapes
booth had some sick surprises in store for Red's Pop Shop, the "paletas" by Eddie Castro had the perfect combo of pop-art-weirdness. And Carlos DonJuan's paintings were fresh, but mature, technically well painted, but adventurous, edgy, and at times even experimental, but with solid determination, as any elements, although seemingly haphazard, had purpose and conviction, and was anything but haphazard -his work has a feeling not dissimilar to Raychel Stine's most excellent show of paintings at Road Agent.

Mixed Media on Birch-4ft.x6ft.-2009

And last, but certainly not least: Lilco Letterpress & Bee-Things -two phenomenal print shops producing awesome and yet somehow very affordable posters, prints, and stationary- they are calling your name, telling you to grab some of their goodies this weekend at Red's. It really should be too good to be true, (very) GOOD ART+DESIGN, at not only 'affordable' prices, but some are absolute steals!!!

For more, see Red's photostream for Pop Shop photos. And you can see it yourself in person in just a few more days (Saturday + Sunday, September 25+26, noon-6pm) -see you soon!

So first off, a shout to the sharp skills of all the artists/designers/vendors at the show, EVERY ONE OF THEM does spectacular work-

Fur Face Boy did a great recap of the event so I'll simply point you in that direction → above photo by Fur Face Boy, and go to his blog for the breakdown, and below, in front of the Fur Face Boy booth on the right is Fur Face Boy in the new MACRODONS shirt, and yours truly on the left in the dope Fur Face Boy shirt.

MACRODONS @ POPUP THREETEN !

POPUP310
MACRODONS

Billy Zinser's MACRODONS series 2 figures & oil paintings will be part of the opening exhibition at POP UP 310 -a temporary art exhibition space in Dallas' West Village, run and curated by James Cope of The Goss-Michael Foundation and Brian Gibb of The Public Trust.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: POP UP 310 is an autonomous curatorial project that will serve as a platform for artists, writers, musicians and all things creative. Housed in what was formerly the Gardens retail space in the West Village, POP UP 310 is in essence a temporary pop up gallery showcasing and exhibiting artwork by emerging and established artists. With the space located in a retail center, the focus of the artwork will be on smaller works, prints and books, creating a gallery experience which is accessible to a broader range of art patrons. This model will also create opportunities for artists to experiment with ideas and materials that may not necessarily be shown in a commercial environment. At its core POP UP 310 is a work in progress, an ongoing project to be considered as an art installation it self.

500X EXPO 2010 - January 16th - 31st, 2010
Reception: Saturday, January 16th, 7–10 pm

BILLY ZINSER

BILLY ZINSER THUMP 2010 acrylic, oil, enamel on panel, 24 x 24 inches

My work is defined by a cartoonish approach to non-objective abstract painting intended to address color, line, and shape as the subject matter of the work, through simple gestures and automatic mark making.

In my paintings I combine these effects with a variety of qualities inherent to the medium of paint and painting, primarily the physicality of the medium and the mark-making of the brushstroke (be that with or without a brush). At times the paint is delivered straight-out-of-the-tube, or manipulated with a utensil to shape it's texture; when applying brushstrokes, some are very slowly and deliberately applied, making their laziness evident when in proximity to a more frenzied automatic mark-making gesture. The body of the paint is also manipulated dramatically, creating tension between sloppy 'juicy' dribbles, stiff paint with erect peaks, richly textured brush marks, globs easily perceived as mistakes, and 'inproper' layering of mediums resulting in wrinkled prematurely dried sagging and leaking paint skin...

WILLIAM LAMSON: WORK & TRADE @ PIEROGI + MACRODON 278

William Lamson's "Work and Trade" collection of 285 trades at Pierogi Gallery (including a MACRODON! -seen third shelf from top, center-right; between two shelves with foliage; to the right of a green vigil praying candle, with what I am assuming to be an illustration of a MACRODON on it; and in front of what appears to be a surrealist painted backdrop of the MACRODON's natural habitat, and to the left of what I imagine to be a sci-fi anime VHS movie, a Christmas card, and a unicorn mug), see pixelated detail below:

again, below is Will's automatic drawing traded for a MACRODON:

and, here is another reimagination of Will Lamson's automatic drawing -in a way, coming full cirlce, back to my initial interpretation of the similarites between Will's drawing and the MACRODON figure traded- by referencing that original MACRODON figure in this recreation Will's drawing:

now, what is happening here, I am not so sure of...
a) MACRODON emitting a burst of smoke/fire
b) MACRODON fart (wow!)
c) whale like blow-gusher?
d) inhalation/absorption of another MACRODON

WILLIAM LAMSON: WORK & TRADE @ PIEROGI + MACRODON 276

Opening this Friday, May 29 at Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn (MAP), William Lamson's solo exhibition "Work and Trade", features projects in which the artist creates a mark-making system through collaboration with forces outside of his control , including a device that consists of a ceiling fan, string, a balloon, and a marker, to create "automatic" drawings. As part of the "trade" component, visitors are invited to offer Lamson something in exchange for a drawing of their choice, at which point the traded item becomes part of a collection of unique objects on display in the gallery. Among those traded objects a MACRODON can be seen... and below, the MACRODON appears alongside it's trade:

just to elaborate a bit on William Lamson's automatic mark-making process, check out this rad video he shot at Pierogi gallery documenting a work in progress:

this is but a taste of this fascinatingly clever concept -allowing visitors the ability to make a trade for a drawing, and through a dialogue with the artist, also to determine the content of the exhibition as well as a system of value for the work offered and traded. check out William Lamson's "Work and Trade" blog, for such gems of trades, such as a cast of a dog skull, several apples, and what appears to be a Fabio CD (?!).

I'm not sure if Will selected the drawing he did for our trade because of a slight MACRODON resemblance in the scribbley-mess (it is not unlike many of my own scribbley-messes), or not, and it was rather subconscious, or simply a serendipitous occurrence... but I saw something there which prompted a theme in today's illustration, a sort of re-interpretation, or response to Will's drawing:
